The Chicago Fire and Philadelphia Union square off Saturday afternoon at the Toyota Park.
The Chicago Fire have struggled out of the gate offensively, producing just one goal in their last two matches. The Fire do have four players with at least two shots on goal, but they simply haven’t been able to find the back of the net so far this season. The good news for the Chicago Fire is that their defense is holding up, resulting in points in back-to-back matches. David Accam leads Chicago with two goals, John Goossens has one assist and Gilberto has five shots. Defensively, Matt Lampson has come away with 14 saves on 19 shots faced. The Chicago Fire have lost three of their last five regular season home games.

The Philadelphia Union have produced five goals in their last two matches and have three players with at least three shots on goal. If that wasn’t impressive, the Union have been stingy on the defensive end, allowing two or less goals in four straight matches. While still very early into the regular season, the Union are clearly making a statement to the rest of the Eastern Conference. Chris Pontius leads Philly with two goals, Leo Fernandes has one assist and C.J. Sapong has six shots. Defensively, Andre Blake has come away with 16 saves on 19 shots faced. The Philadelphia Union have lost three of their last four regular season road games.
Four of the last five matches between these two teams has resulted in a draw. The only victory during that time came in March of last year, a 1-0 win by the Fire. Three of the last five matches has produced two or less goals.
While history between these clubs would suggest another draw, I’m very impressed with the way the Union have been playing out of the gate. I think Philly can get the win on the road here.
