The first of the Champions League quarter finals will see Benfica travel to the Allianz Arena to take on Bayern Munich.
Bayern are second favourites for the competition and deservedly so with Pep Guardiola's side five points clear in the Bundesliga and with just three losses in their last thirty five games. With Thomas Muller, Frank Ribery, Arjen Robben, Thiago Alacantra and Robert Lewandowski there is alot of attacking talent on display here with Bayern Munich and I think that this team will want to win the Champions League. No matter how successful Bayern are in the Bundesliga their season is defined by how well they do in the Champions League. For many clubs across Europe a domestic title would be a huge achievement but for Bayern a domestic title is expected and the truth be known the fans probably expect a cup win too. The Champions League is the holy grail for Munich and they have they squad this year to compete with Barcelona, Real Madrid and have a nice draw here against Benfica who would have been seen as one of the weaker opposition left in the competition.
While Benfica do come into this game as massive underdogs the Portugese league leaders will not be overawed by Bayern Munich. Benfica have themselves dominated their domestic games with thirty four league titles and two Champions League wins to their credit. Recent times have not been kind to Benfica but they still are one of the biggest clubs in Europea and they have been impressive in this years Champions League knockout phase beating a highly talented Zenit St Petersburg team home and away to make it to the quarter finals. Benfica will look to their front two of Mitroglu and Jonas to take the game to Bayern Munich the latter having scored thirty league goals this season is having a career year and will be a danger for Benfica upfront.
Looking at this game it's tough to see any value in the home side Bayern Munich are heavy favourites here and will be expected to win comfortably. While Benfica should give them a game I think it's tough to see the Portugese side getting anything out of the game. I think though there is some value in taking Bayern Munich to win and both teams to score. Benfica have scored in their last twenty games and all of their Champions League games this season, Munich's defence has also been fallible at times and at the price of +275 it looks too big to me.
