The LA Galaxy and Portland Timbers square off late Sunday night at the StubHub Center.
The LA Galaxy are off to a solid 2-1-1 start to the season and remain in the thick of the Western Conference. The Galaxy have relied on a defense that’s allowed just three goals and 18 shots on goal in four matches. The Galaxy are coming off a shutout against the Whitecaps and have allowed two or less goals in five straight matches. Offensively, Robbie Keane leads Los Angeles with two goals, Mike Magee has two assists and Gyasi Zardes has eight shots. Defensively, Brian Rowe has come away with 16 saves on 18 shots faced. The LA Galaxy have come away with points in five of their last six regular season home games.
USA TODAY Sports
The Portland Timbers are off to a frustrating 1-2-1 start and hope they can turn it around with points in this big road match. The Timbers are very aggressive on the offensive end with three players with at least 11 shots. However, the Portland Timbers could be better defensively, as their goalie is saving about 50 percent of his shots, and they’re coming off a loss against Orlando in which they allowed four goals. Fanendo Adi leads Portland with three goals, Diego Valeri has one assist and Dairon Asprilla has 11 shots. Defensively, Adam Kwarasey has come away with 10 saves on 19 shots faced. The Portland Timbers have won three of their last five regular season road games.
The Galaxy have beaten the Timbers in two of the last four meetings and is 2-2-1 in the last five meetings overall. However, the Timbers did beat the Galaxy in the last meeting back in October, 5-2. The last two meetings have combined for 12 goals.
One thing you learn quickly in MLS is that you don’t bet against the Galaxy when they’re playing at home. Especially when they’re playing a team that struggles big time on the defensive end. I’m siding with Los Angeles to win another home match.
