The Portland Timbers and San Jose Earthquakes meet late Saturday night at the Providence Park.
The Portland Timbers could use some points here to get back in the thick of the Western Conference. The Portland Timbers continue to struggle on the defensive end, as their 13 goals allowed are tied with the New York Red Bulls for the most in the MLS. Offensively, the Timbers have four different players with 10 or more shot attempts. Fanendo Adi leads Portland with four goals, Diego Valeri has two assists and Dairon Asprilla has 11 shots. Defensively, Adam Kwarasey has come away with 16 saves on 28 shots faced. The Portland Timbers have earned points in seven of their last 10 regular season home games.

The San Jose Earthquakes look to keep rolling after earning points in three straight matches. The Earthquakes have been a consistent team this season, and it starts with an offense that has scored nine goals in six matches and has five players with two or more shots on goal. The San Jose Earthquakes can make a real statement in this match on the road. Chris Wondolowski leads San Jose with five goals, Quincy Amarikwa has three assists and Tommy Thompson has five shots. Defensively, David Bingham has come away with 19 saves on 26 shots faced. The San Jose Earthquakes have lost six of their last nine regular season road games.
Portland has beaten San Jose in three of the last five meetings and is 3-1-1 during that span overall. The Earthquakes only victory over the Timbers during that stretch was a 2-1 win a few weeks ago. At least one team has failed to score in three of the last four matches between these two clubs.
San Jose hasn’t been the best road team in the MLS and has a history of really stinking up the joint when playing against the Timbers. This is a big game for Portland to kind of get back on track, and I think it’s capable of getting it done.
