Peru and Colombia meet late Friday night in the 2016 Copa America quarterfinals at MetLife Stadium.
Peru ended up winning group B with victories over Haiti and Brazil, & a draw with Ecuador. While Peru has been very impressive this tournament, Raul Ruidiaz’s goal against Brazil was a clear handball that should not have counted. Either way, Peru has been very impressive on the defensive end with two shutouts in three matches and allowed 12 shots on target overall. Peru has now allowed one or less goals in four of its last five matches. Offensively, Paolo Guerrero has set the tone for La Blanquirroja with one goal, two assists and seven shot attempts through the group stages. Peru hopes to make the semifinals of Copa America for the third straight appearance.
USA TODAY Sports
Colombia finished second in group A with victories over the United States and Paraguay, & a upset loss to Costa Rica. Colombia has turned to an aggressive offensive attack this tournament as it’s produced two goals in all three matches and an impressive 19 shots on target. James Rodriguez has produced two goals, one assist and 10 shot attempts while Carlos Bacca has one goal and nine shot attempts in two matches. Colombia has now scored no less than two goals in six straight matches. Also, despite losing time of possession twice in three matches, Los Cafeteros has allowed just nine shots on target and David Ospina has allowed one goal in 180 minutes of play. Colombia has not made the semifinals of Copa America since 2004.
It’s tough to bet against Colombia with how consistent it’s been this tournament and the offensive attack we’ve seen the last several matches. Forget just Copa America, Colombia has scored at least two goals in six straight matches. If that number keeps up, Peru simply doesn't have the offensive firepower to keep up.
I expect Colombia to advance to the semifinals.
