Romania look to book their ticket to the knockout stage with a convincing win in their final group stage game against the pesky Albanians.
Romania suffered a heartbreak in their tournament opener against France in a game in which they probably should have earned at least a single point – deservedly or not – but a late goal from Dmitri Payet broke their spirits and left them without anything. However, they did respond nicely in a game with Switzerland earlier this week which led to an early goal scored by virtue of a penalty kick but they couldn’t hold off the Swiss who netted a second half equalizer and probably were lucky to escape with a single point. Romania will be out to earn a victory here as they will likely fall short of the knockout stage with anything less and with France and Switzerland facing off at the same time, Romania knows they are in control of their own fate and need to take care of business on their own before they can worry about anything else.
Albania meanwhile is likely done from the tournament after this encounter and it is really too bad as they have played two very inspired games and have come up just short in both as they could very well be sitting on two points after their first two games instead of none. The Albanians made a crucial error by substituting Arlind Ajeti who was excellent against the French and with six minutes to go he was pulled from the game and as such France netted two goals in that span to clinch the win and breaking Albanian hearts. They will likely employ a similar style here as a three point final will likely not be enough to get them through as a wild card so sticking to what they are good at will be the key here. However, Romania desperately need a win and while they looked better in a losing effort against France than they did in a draw with Switzerland I think they show up here with their best game and earn three pivotal points.
