Portugal and Hungary meet up in France on Wednesday afternoon in a pivotal group stage show down that has massive implications on the knockout stage.
Portugal’s nightmare tournament will look to come up roses on Friday as they still have a shot at winning the group as they face off against the surprising Hungarians who have a win and a draw in their first two games and are currently atop the group after two matches. Portugal’s success and more so, its failures, fall on the shoulders of Cristiano Ronaldo who has had ample opportunity to get his country a game breaking tally but he has yet to find the back of the net and rung a gift wrapped PK off the bar against Austria which could have put them in the driver’s seat. However, Ronaldo and the world’s bets players always seem to show up on the biggest stage and while the Portuguese team isn’t as class as they have been in the past they are certainly more talented on paper than the Hungarians and the line reflects that.
Hungary netted a massive win in their tournament opener against Austria to the tune of a 2-0 final and then played to a 1-1 draw against Iceland which sets up the most exciting final group stage day of the tournament as there is so much left to be determined om Group F.Hungary was given not shot to earn a point in this group but they have done that and more as they have four points through two matches and poise a problem for a Portuguese side who will be playing under intense scrutiny and will have all of the pressure on them to get a victory. However, while Hungary has surprised so far I think they regressed against Iceland and with so much on the line for Portugal and this already being considered a success for Hungary sets up a potentially ugly final here in favour of Ronaldo and the Portuguese.
