The United States and Colombia meet Saturday night in the 2016 Copa America third place game at the University of Phoenix Stadium.
The United States is coming off a 0-4 semifinals loss to Argentina. The US was dominated from start to finish, as it gave up a goal in the first three minutes and didn’t get a single shot on goal. The United States didn’t have one shot attempt at all and controlled the ball just 32.2 percent of the match. It was the third time in the USMNT last 10 matches where the team was shutout. The US was certainly undermanned and heavy underdogs entering the match, but it’s certainly tough to take away anything positive from the loss. The good news for the States is that they do get back Jermaine Jones and Bobby Wood, guys who have made key contributions throughout this tournament. However, it will be interesting to see how motivated the team will be after its semifinals performance.

Colombia is coming off a 0-2 semifinals loss to Chile. Colombia allowed both goals within the first 11 minutes and really struggled to find its footing after getting punched in the mouth early. Colombia has now been shutout in its last two matches after putting together at least two goals in its previous six matches. The good news for Colombia is that it did outshoot Chili with 16 shot attempts, but only three of those shots were on target. James Rodriguez continues to lead the way with his aggressiveness and has 10 shot attempts in his last two matches, but his teammates have had a hard time finding quality looks at the net. Colombia has to find its rhythm offensively if it wants its best Copa America finish since 2001.
These two teams met in the Copa America opener in which Colombia won 2-0. In the match, Colombia had seven shots on goal and simply outplayed the United States from the opening minute. Since then, the US has been a lot more aggressive and engaged, and that should be the case here even more with revenge on its mind. I think this match means more to the United States, as a third place finish would be considered a success. Colombia is also having issues on the offensive end.
Don’t love the pick, but I think the US can win this match.
