With only four games played Crystal Palace fired head coach Frank De Boer. It's a terrible decision this early in the season, De Boer deserved more time to try to implement his philosophy. He also deserved more support in the transfer market before the season started. Crystal Palace actually played quite well against Burnley in their last game, the manager could not be blamed for the loss with Benteke and Dann in particular responsible for missing guilt edged chances which could have at the very least earned Palace a draw. Palace have now turned to Roy Hodgson, the former England manager. He's probably best suited to manage a team like the one Palace have assembled and will play a more route one football than De Boer was prepared to play. Benteke, Puncheon, Cabaye, Dann all very talented players but they have failed to deliver this season for the eagles and until such time as the players start playing it's tough to take Crystal Palace in any game.
Southampton come into this game after a very disappointing loss to Watford. The Saints have a very talented squad and will be looking at this game as one they can win away from home. The Saints up front with Gabbiadini, Long, Tadic and Austin have lots of firepower that will trouble Crystal Palace's back four. Southampton still have not seen Virgil Van Djik on the field for the first team but the big centre half played for the U23's on Monday and could be in line for a return this weekend. Van Djik was at the center of a transfer controversy this summer when he tried to force through a move to Liverpool. His influence at the centre of the Saints defence though is still missed and manager Manuel Pelligrino may feel like now is the right time to reintroduce the talented dutch man.
On paper there isnt much to seperate these two but coming into this game there has been alot of unrest at Crystal Palace and a change of manager this early in the season is almost unprecidented. Quite often though a change in manager can reinvigorate players and perhaps a change in style might suit Crystal Palace here with De Boer's passing game being too complex for the players he had. This isnt a strong play but I feel that Crystal Palace might just get a much needed win here and given they are at home and the price we are getting it's the right play.
