One of the games of the week in the Champions League on Tuesday will see Premier League leaders Manchester City host a red hot Shakhtar Donetsk at the Ethiad Arena.
While many expect this to be a cake walk for the early pace setters in the Premier League I personally think we shouldnt be so quick to discount this Shakhtar team. Shakhtar are ten games into their domestic league and have already gotten a lead at the top of the division. In addition Shakhtar shocked Napoli in game week one in what was probably the performance of the round. Goals from Brazilian Taison and top scorer Ferreyra gave the Ukranian side a two goal advantage before Napoli pulled one back through a late penalty. There are plenty of south american talent in this Shakhtar team with Bernard, Fred, Marlos all hailing from Brazil and the aforementioned pairing of Taison and Ferreyra. This is a side who will come to Manchester and think they can compete, they wont be afraid to get on the ball and attack city and unlike alot of City's Premier League opposition this side will be comfortable in possession.
Its tough to look at this Manchester City side and not think that goals are almost guaranteed. Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus up front are a lethal combination and with De Bruyne, the pair of Silva's , Sterling providing the amunition from midfield this is a side thats built to win. Pep Guardiola has taken a while to settle in Manchester but his team is definitely coming around to his way of thinking. City are dominating the possession stats and once they find a way through and get a lead they have been devestating in dismantling teams who come out and try to play against their superior passing game.
This is an interesting one. I was very impressed with Shakhtar in game week 1 but and there is always a but Shakhtar have not travelled well in the Champions League the last time they played in the competition they lost all three of their away games in the group stage. I do think this is a stronger bunch of players though and I believe that we could be seeing the remergence of this side after they sold the majority of their foreign players a couple of years ago. Manchester City for me still have too many weaknesses at the back and I think taking Shakhtar here on the first hald handicap is the play. While City may eventually break down the visitors I think that we still get the win here.
