The Vancouver Whitecaps and Sporting Kansas City meet Friday in MLS soccer action at Children's Mercy Park.
The Vancouver Whitecaps could use a bounce back performance to snap a two-match losing streak in which they were outscored 4-1. The Vancouver Whitecaps have allowed 11 goals on the season, which is tied with Kansas City for the most of any team in the top half of Western Conference teams. The Vancouver Whitecaps have been held to one or less goals in four of their last five games and often struggle to get good looks on the offensive end. The defense has to improve if Vancouver is going to be competitive, as the offense isn’t consistent enough to produce points. Stefan Marinović has 11 saves on 21 shots faced. Kei Kamara leads the Whitecaps with three goals, Alphonso Davies has two assists and Cristian Techera has nine shots.
USA TODAY Sports
Sporting Kansas City is off to an impressive 4-1-2 start the season and have earned points in every match since its opening match loss to New York City. Sporting Kansas City has also improved its defensive issues in its last few matches, giving up a combined two goals in its last three matches. Tim Melia has come away with 21 saves on 33 shots faced. The aggressive offense is there, and if Kansas City can continue to keep the ball out of its own net, this will be a tough team to beat moving forward. Felipe Gutierrez leads Sporting Kansas City with five goals, Daniel Salloi has three assists and Johnny Russell has 23 shots.
Vancouver has won the last two meetings against Kansas City, but the last five meetings have been split at 2-2-1. Each of the last three meetings a team has been shutout, but four of the last five meetings have produced at least two combined goals.
Sporting Kansas City is playing really well at the moment and is arguably the hottest team in the league right now. Sporting Kansas City also has to work less hard offensively and gets a ton more quality looks at the net than Vancouver. The Whitecaps have some serious issues on the offensive end and are averaging just three shots on target per match this season. If Sporting Kansas City plays the way it’s played the last few matches, this should be a routine home victory.
