We have some MLS soccer action from MAPFRE stadium on Saturday evening, as the Columbus Crew host Toronto FC in a Trillium Cup rivalry matchup.
The Columbus Crew will be hoping to extend their seven match unbeaten run after snapping a three game winning streak with a scoreless draw against Sporting Kansas City in their last outing. The Crew had the game’s best scoring chance in the 43rd minute when the Crew won a penalty, but Gyasi Zardes missed from the spot. The Crew also played the entire second half with 10 men as Federico Higuain was sent off following a video review call in extended first half stoppage time and will be unavailable for this match. Zardes leads Columbus in scoring this season with 8 goals, 33 shots and 17 shots on target, while the aforementioned Higuain leads the Crew with 4 assists this season.

Toronto FC are in dire need of a win after losing three of their last four games following a 1-0 home loss to FC Dallas in their last outing. Former TFC man Max Urruti put his former club behind the 8 ball eleven minutes into the match and Sebastian Giovinco had a crucial miss from the penalty spot just six minutes later that would end up being massive as TFC ended the match without a point to show for their efforts. Giovinco is one of five TFC players that share the team lead in scoring with two goals this season, however the Atomic Ant leads the team with 38 shots, 19 on target this season in addition to a team-high 2 assists.
Head-to-head, Toronto FC have had the bulk of the success, winning three of the last five meetings, drawing one and Columbus winning the most recent by a final score of 2-0. Also worth noting is that the last four meetings have seen only one, or neither team get on the scoresheet at the final whistle.
I think it’s safe to say that even though it’s still fairly early on in the season, it’s quickly becoming do or die for TFC to defend their MLS championship. However, even in a pressure situation, I’m not sure how you can go against Columbus here. The Crew come into this one in much better form and with the cheap price, I think the home win is a viable option on Saturday.
