We have some MLS action coming our way from Children’s Mercy Park on Sunday night, as Sporting Kansas City play host to Minnesota United.

Sporting Kansas City will be hoping to add another notch to their impressive point streak, getting a point in 11 of their last 12 games following a second straight draw, the last being a scoreless tie against Columbus Crew in their last outing. KC dodged a bullet in the 43rd minute when Crew striker Gyasi Zardes missed from the spot and had their fortunes turn last in first half stoppage time as Federico Higuain was sent off, leaving Columbus to play the entire second half with ten men. Unfortunately Kansas City was not able to capitalize, despite dominating the possession battle with 61% possession and outshooting Columbus 15-12, with each team hitting the target three times. Johnny Russell and Felipe Gutierrez are tied for the SKC lead in scoring with 5 goals apiece, while Roger Espinoza and Daniel Salloi are tied with 4 assists to lead Kansas City in that category.

Minnesota United come into this one looking to build on their 2-0 victory over Montreal Impact in their last outing, snapping a three game winless drought. The game was a stalemate until the 52nd minute, when Christian Ramirez and Miguel Ibarra scored 6 minutes apart to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead that was more than enough to secure the victory. Minnesota had possession for only 46% of the match, being outshot 14-10 by Montreal and 4-3 in terms of shots on target. The aforementioned Christian Ramirez and Carlos Quintero are tied for the team lead in scoring with 3 goals apiece, while Miguel Ibarra leads Minnesota United with 2 assists this season.

An interesting trend, the last two matches have seen 1-1 draws, while in the seven all-time meetings between these two teams, the home team has never lost, with 4 wins and three draws after 90 minutes.

Obviously Sporting Kansas City is the team in much better form here, and I’d need to see more from Minnesota than a win over quite possibly the worst team in MLS this season in Montreal. However, Minnesota seems to play Kansas City tough and one of KC’s last two draws came against this same Minnesota side just a couple of weeks ago, so I’ll take a stab at the draw here and braver punters will maybe want to take a look at the 1-1 final score for a third consecutive meeting.
