Serbia and Chile meet Monday in International Friendly soccer action in Graz, Austria.

Serbia hopes to continue building confidence in these matches before playing in its first World Cup since 2010. Serbia is coming off a 2-0 victory over Nigeria and has won five of its last eight matches overall. In the most recent outing, Serbia got both goals from Aleksandar Mitrovic and has now scored at least once in eight of its last 10 International Friendly matches. Serbia enters play as a rather young team that is limited due to injuries, as players such as Matija Nastasic, Aleksandar Jovanovic, Nemanja Maksimovic and Mijat Gacinovic won’t be playing in the tournament. Even then, Serbia still has a midfield that can go toe-to-toe with just about any in the tournament and a youngster in Mitrovic who is capable of taking matches over when playing with confidence. Serbia is a potential dark horse in the upcoming tournament with the ability to make it out of the group stage for the first time since 1998.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Chile is simply out to gain experience after missing out on the World Cup for the first time since 2006. Chile is throwing out an extremely young team to the point Gary Medel is the only player on the current squad who has 20-plus caps. There’s only a handful of players who have double-digit caps under their belt and only nine of the players have scored an international goal. The good news for Chile is that its been competitive since failing to qualify, as it beat Sweden back in late March, took Denmark to a 0-0 draw and scored twice against Romania despite a loss. In its recent match, Guillermo Maripán and Lorenzo Reyes both found the back of the net, giving the Red One a chance to win before allowing a late goal to Constantin Budescu. Either way, Chile has proven to be a first club that won’t go away regardless of the talent and experience gap against most teams.

The last time these clubs met was in a 2012 International Friendly, a meeting Serbia won 3-1.

Serbia is a banged up team that needs to find confidence before the World Cup begins, and it’s also a club that doesn’t get shutout often. Chile really has nothing to play for at this point and is extremely wet behind the ears with its current squad. We could see the Eagles find the back of the net early and sit on a lead to snag a victory. Chile seems to be in over its head here with the roster its putting out.

I like Serbia to win this match.
