We have some international friendly action on the soccer pitch as Russia takes on Turkey from the CSKA arena in Moscow.
Russia is hoping to continue the dominant success of host countries in the World Cup, as all but one team since the World Cup expanded to a group stage format in 1950 have gone into the knockout rounds, however if their current run extends into this year’s tournament, the Russians may join South Africa as the only countries with the dubious distinction of not qualifying for the round of 16. Russia is winless in their last 6 international matchups, logging 2 draws and 4 losses, including a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Austria last week. The possession was almost even, however Austria dominated the Russians offensively, outshooting Russia 14-4 with the Russian team not registering a single shot on target. The ship will have to be righted quickly for Stanislav Cherchesov’s men as this is the final tune-up match before the World Cup starts on June 14th.

Turkey on the other hand are looking to build some momentum heading towards the 2022 edition of the tournament, and took some positive steps in the right direction after going unbeaten in their last 4 matches. Turkey has held their own against some quality competition that is in the 2018 World Cup, including a 2-1 win over Iran and a 2-2 draw against Tunisia in their last outing. Everton striker Cenk Tosun opened the scoring from the penalty spot before being sent off in the 59th minute and Caglar Soyuncu equalized in the 90th minute for Turkey.
The only meeting between these two sides was a scoreless draw in August 2016.
If we are being honest, I’m not sure how anyone can lay juice with Russia, even if the squad knows this is their last chance to get 100% match ready before the tournament starts. Turkey is a quality team with lots of talent and have proven they can hang with capable opposition, so I think taking a double chance with Turkey and a draw is the way to go here as I don’t see Russia winning this match.
