Nigeria and Czech Republic meet Wednesday in International Friendly soccer action at Schwechat Stadium.
Nigeria will play its last friendly match before its opening World Cup match against Croatia. Nigeria is a club that could use some confidence before the tournament considering it last lost three of its last four matches. Nigeria is coming off a 2-1 loss to England and has had issues on the defensive end, allowing two or more goals in three of those four games and hasn’t pitched a shutout since its win over Poland back in March. Nigeria needs to find some answers at goalie before the tournament and the injury to Moses Simon doesn’t help those defensive concerns. Ogenyi Onazi says that his team will be ready once the games matter, and this is still a promising squad that made it to the round of 16 four years ago in Brazil. There’s still reason for optimism with the Super Eagles, and maybe things do come together in a couple of weeks, but improvement in this friendly match is needed to inspire confidence. You can’t just assume the stars will align out of thin air.

Czech Republic is a club that looks to play spoiler, as this will be its last friendly match before the UEFA Nations League in September. Czech Republic hasn’t qualified for the World Cup since 2006 and enters this match getting smoked in two of its last three matches. Czech Republic is coming off a 4-0 loss to Australia and lost 2-0 to Uruguay in late March. Pretty much any sort of positive results to take from this match will be appreciated, as things have been quite ugly the last few times this club has taken the field. Czech Republic has been held to one or less goals in three of its last four matches and the last match to the Aussies showed some clear defensive hiccups. This simply shouldn’t be the case for Czech Republic, one of the more experienced teams in terms of friendly play, as there’s 16 players with double-digit caps on the current squad.
There’s no previous meetings between these two sides.
Czech Republic really has nothing to play for at this point and has been playing like it recently. Nigeria should be much more focused on the World Cup and shouldn’t kill itself for a positive result. However, Nigeria does need to play better than its past few matches if it hopes for success in the upcoming tournament. You can’t just flip a switch when its time to play seriously.
I’ll side with Nigeria to get the victory.
