A pair of World Cup hopefuls meet in a friendly match as England hosts Costa Rica in soccer action from Elland Road in Leeds, England.

England comes into this match unbeaten in their last nine games, including a narrow 2-1 win from Wembley over a very game Nigerian side on Saturday. Gary Cahill opened the scoring just seven minutes in, converting a header from a corner and firing it into the top corner. Harry Kane doubled the lead in the 39th minute taking a ball from Raheem Sterling and slotting it home for England’s second goal of the match. Alex Iwobi cut the lead in half but it wasn’t enough as England emerged victorious at the final whistle. England outpossessed Nigeria 59-41, with each team having 12 shots, four on target.

England vs. Costa Rica - 6/7/18 International Friendly Soccer Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

Costa Rica will look to turn their fortunes around after winning just two of their last eight matches, but took a step in the right direction with a 3-0 thumping of Northern Ireland in a friendly match of their own on Sunday. Johan Venegas gave the Costa Ricans the lead 30 minutes in, before Joel Campbell doubled the lead just after halftime in the 46th minute and Francisco Calvo put it away in the 66th minute, giving the Costa Ricans the 3-0 final score line. The statistics point towards Costa Rica wholeheartedly, with 64% possession to Northern Ireland’s 36, outshooting Northern Ireland 21-3 with 5 shots on target and 8 corner kicks to Northern Ireland’s 0.

The only other time these two teams met was in the 2014 World Cup, which was a notoriously (what some would call boring) 0-0 draw.

The temptation of the heavy plus money with Costa Rica is tempting considering it only takes one bounce for the ball to end up in the back of the net and it may only take one goal to win this match. However, England has been in a much better run of form, but I’m not trying to lay this kind of juice. With that said, I’m expecting a fairly cautious approach by both sides with the Big Dance right around the corner, so I’m going to side with the under in this one.
