Iceland vs. Ghana

International Friendly Soccer: Thursday, June 7, 2018 at 4:00 pm (Laugardalsvollur)

The Line: Ghana +260 / Iceland +123 / Draw +224 -- Over/Under: 2 See the Latest Odds

Iceland and Ghana meet Thursday in International Friendly soccer action at Laugardalsvollur.

Iceland will play its last friendly match here before participating in its first ever World Cup with an opening match against Argentina. Iceland has lost each of its last three matches, which includes a 3-2 loss to Norway last week, but this is a club that’s already overcome the odds and is playing with house money at this point. Iceland is the smallest nation by population to ever clinch a FIFA World Cup berth, and that alone is a monster accomplishment for this club to build on moving forward. However, this is no longer the little engine that could, as Iceland almost qualified for the tournament in 2014 and made the quarterfinals of the European Championship. It’s a fun story and inspiring for other smaller clubs, but Iceland is no longer catching teams off guard and will have the attention of every team it comes across.

Erich Schlegel-USA TODAY Sports

Ghana won’t be playing in the World Cup for the first time since 2002, and some believe this club is left for dead at this point. It has to be disappointing not playing on the big stage, but Ghana has produced some positive results lately, which includes a 2-0 victory over Japan, a 1-1 draw against Egypt and a 4-1 win over Nigeria last September. Ghana is certainly doing what it can to put the past in the past and build some impressive momentum heading into the Africa Cup of Nations qualifications later this year. Kwesi Appiah is being positive with his club and likes what he’s seen so far, especially in young goalie Richard Ofori, who may be the future of this club and a key piece in getting things back on track for the Black Stars.

There’s no previous meetings between these two sides.

Iceland should be able to play to its crowd here and steal a victory if it comes to win, but you have to question the motivation with the World Cup on deck. It’s easy to overlook these matches and we’ve seen other teams lay an egg in their last home friendly before bolting for the big tournament. Ghana is a club that’s shown up against quality teams recently and wants to continue to positive vibes moving forward. Iceland has been very shaky defensively as of late. I’m taking the over in this game.
