The reigning European champions play their final World Cup tune-up match when they take on Algeria from the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon on Thursday.
Portugal come into this friendly looking to turn things around after going winless in their last three matches and in four of their last five matches overall. Portugal dropped a 3-0 decision to the Netherlands in March and most recently back-to-back draws against fellow World Cup teams like Tunisia (2-2) and Belgium in a scoreless draw this past Saturday. Portugal and Belgium split the possession 50/50, with Portugal outshooting Belgium 13-10 with both sides logging 3 shots on target.

Algeria on the other hand will be playing for pride and to put forth a good showing after missing out on the World Cup, failing to win a game in the group stage but being awarded a default win over Nigeria due to an ineligibility issue. The Algerians also come into this one losers of three straight friendly matches, most recently a 3-2 loss to Cape Verde. Islam Slimani will be the best chance for Algeria to get something from this match, as his 26 career international goals sit him 4th on the national team’s all time scoring list.
This will be the first time that these two sides meet, however Portugal has a very good record against African competition, putting up 13 wins, 5 draws and just 3 losses in 21 all-time matchups with a +25 goal difference. Algeria will be looking to turn their fortunes around away from home after winning just one of their last 13 away matches.
Portugal’s form is less than inspiring with the World Cup just over a week away, however I’m not sure how anyone could even consider taking a flyer on Algeria with the way they’ve played lately, going up against the European champions and a favorite to at the very least, advance to the round of 16. All in all, I think this is a game that Portugal won’t take lightly, so I’ll take the Portuguese to notch a win by a couple of goals here.
