We have some midweek MLS action on the soccer pitch as Columbus Crew take on Atlanta United from MAPFRE Stadium.

Columbus Crew will look to extend their current unbeaten run in league play which currently sits at nine games following a 1-1 draw with New York Red Bull in their last outing. Gyasi Zardes gave the Crew the lead 26 minutes in before Alex Muyl equalized for New York, leading to the stalemate at the final whistle. Columbus out possessed New York in the win, holding the ball for 53% possession while also outshooting New York 18-11 with 6 shots on target to the Red Bull’s 4. Zardes’ marker pushed his team lead in scoring to 10 goals this season, good for 2nd in MLS, while Federico Higuain leads the Crew with 5 assists on the year.

Atlanta United will also look to keep their run of unbeaten form going after making it points in three straight games with a 1-1 draw of their own against NYCFC in their last outing. It took 48 minutes for us to break the scoreless deadlock before Josef Martinez gave Atlanta the lead but United couldn’t hold on as Alexander Callens equalized for New York City FC in the 77th minute to level the match at the eventual final score line. Atlanta were essentially dominated in all facets statistically, allowing NYCFC to own 61% possession, being outshot 25-5, with NYCFC notching 10 shots on target to Atlanta’s 2. Martinez’s marker gave him a league-leading 13 goals this season, while Miguel Almiron leads Atlanta with 6 assists on the year.

The three league meetings between these two teams have gone Atlanta’s way, with United winning two of the three and the other being a scoreless draw in last year’s playoffs, with Columbus winning on penalties.

Columbus’ run of form over the last month or so has been solid, so it’s easy to understand why they’d be favourites here. However, the Crew just can’t seem to get over the hump and get a win at the final whistle, drawing their last three contests. Atlanta is in the same boat, with draws in two of their last three and since I see this one being a tightly contested affair, I’m going to side with the draw as my final outcome, while braver punters can chase the final score line of 1-1.
