We have some Group F action from the FIFA World Cup as Germany takes on Mexico from the Luzhniki arena on Sunday.

Germany comes into the 2018 World Cup, looking to defend their 2014 crown as the top-ranked team in the world according to FIFA’s world rankings. The Germans dominated on their way to punching their ticket to Russia, winning every one of their qualifying games, scoring 43 goals and conceding just four. The national team snubbing of Leroy Sane has made headlines, but if we’re being honest, it’s like like coach Joachim Low doesn’t have a wealth of riches at his disposal. Captain Manuel Neuer has been included in the squad, but one has to be concerned about possible match fitness due to injury but Neuer did play both friendly tune-ups last week for the Germans. Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng and Joshua Kimmich return to anchor the German defence, while the midfield will sport a combination of Sami Khedira, Julian Draxler, Toni Kroos, Mesut Ozil, and Ilkay Gundogan among others. Timo Werner, Marco Reus, Thomas Muller and Mario Gomez will be tasked to handle the attacking for the Germans up front.

Mexico on the other hand, had to put forth a bit more of a fight, but advanced to the World Cup as the top team in “the HEX” also known as the final stage of CONCACAF qualifying, finishing with a 6-3-1 record. The Mexicans come into the 2018 edition of the tournament as the #15 ranked team in the world, looking to make it past the Round of 16 for the first time since 1986, losing in the Round of 16 in each of the last 6 World Cups. Coach Juan Carlos Osorio will be hoping to get big contributions from pieces like expected starting goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, midfielders Jonathan dos Santos, Giovani dos Santos and captain Andres Guarded, along with Carlos Vela and Javier Hernandez up front.

These two teams have only met once since 2005, with Germany notching a decisive 4-1 win over Mexico in the 2017 Confederations Cup.

I really want to give Mexico a chance in this game, however when you compare the two lineups side-by-side, the advantage is heavily swayed towards the Germans. I do think that Mexico will be the other team to come out of this group, but for the first game of the group, I see Germany notching another decisive win, so I’ll back the Germans to start their tournament off with a win here.
