Mexico and Germany meet Sunday in World Cup soccer action at Luzhniki Stadium.

Mexico is in its seventh straight World Cup and is a regular in terms of making it out of the group stages, so this is a club that won’t be intimated by opening up the tournament against arguably the tournament favorites. Eli Tri is one of the better defensive teams in the tournament, allowing one or less goals in six of its last seven matches and has a proven goalie in Guillermo Ochoa. Mexico also has its fair share of offensive firepower, mainly in youngsters such as Hirving Lozano and Carlos Vela, a pair of strikers who are more than capable of taking over a single match. If Mexico can find that balance of offense to go with its battle tested defense, this is a club that could go a long way in the tournament. The problem is Juan Carlos Osorio does make questionable decisions at times and the Mexicans have yet to find consistent offensive success.

Mexico vs. Germany - 6/17/18 World Cup Soccer Pick, Odds, and Prediction

David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

Germany is out to defend its World Cup title from 2014 and enters this tournament as the top favorites along with Brazil. The Germans don’t exactly have star power or the big names, but they’re an extremely deep club where everybody knows their role and they know when to flip the switch on the big stage. You know your team is in great hands talent wise when you’re able to leave a player such as Leroy Sane home. Germany does come into this match losing two of its last three matches, but you can take friendly results with a grain of result when you factor in the experience and success of this current club. Toni Kroos has established himself as one of the top midfielders in the sport, Thomas Muller can carry this team for long stretches with his scoring ability and Manuel Neuer seems to be healthy despite a foot injury. Germany has a real chance to repeat as World Cup champs for the first time since Brazil in 1958-62.

There’s no previous meetings between these two sides.

Mexico is a stiff test for the defending champs right off the bat, but it should be good for them, as this is a match that will have their attention. Sometimes you can see sluggish starts to a tournament, and we’ve seen it the past couple of days for many clubs. When Germany is motivated and respects its opponent, good things usually happen. While Mexico is solid defensively, it can struggle to find consistent offense, and Germany is arguably the deepest and most balanced team in the world.

Hard to bet against the Germans in this match.
