We have some Group A World Cup action from the Saint Petersburg Stadium on Tuesday as the host Russians take on Egypt.

Russia comes into this one at the top of group A after a dominant 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia to kick off the tournament last Thursday. Yury Gazinskiy gave Russia the lead just 12 minutes in before Denis Cheryshev doubled that advantage just before halftime. Artem Dzyuba made it 3-0 and Cheryshev made it 4 with a cheeky goal from the outside of the box with the outside of his left foot that lobbed over the keeper for an early candidate for goal of the tournament. Aleksandr Golovin closed out the game with a 5th goal from a set piece. Despite the dominant final score line, Russia was out possessed 61-39 by the Saudi Arabians, outshooting the Saudis 14-6 with 7 shots on target to Saudi Arabia’s 0.

Egypt on the other hand will be looking to rebound after dropping their tournament opener by a final score of 1-0 against Uruguay on Friday. Egypt kept it close for the majority of the match before Jose Maria Gimenez gave the Uruguayans the lead just one minute before injury time, resulting in the loss for the Egyptians. The big story for Egypt was star striker Mohamed Sarah not seeing the pitch in the defeat. It has yet to be determined if Salah will make an appearance in this match, let alone start. Egypt was out possessed by Uruguay 57-43, with Uruguay notching 14 shots on target to Egypt’s 8, and 4-3 in terms of shots on goal.

These two sides have never met before.

If Salah is able to go for Egypt, I’d give the Egyptians a fighting chance because that will probably bring a huge boost of energy to the squad. However, I still have to go under the assumption that he will not play or if he does, it will be in a limited capacity and if that’s the case, I have to go with Russia here. I am still not sold that the home team will do much past the group stage, but they did look very good in dominating Saudi Arabia, and I think the home support could very well carry them to a 2nd win and a spot in the Round of 16, so I’ll side with Russia to get the job done on Tuesday.
