We have some Group C World Cup action on Thursday as France takes on Peru from the Central Stadium in Yekaterinburg.
France will look to punch their ticket to the round of 16 after opening the tournament with a 2-1 win over Australia in their opening match on Saturday. Antoine Griezmann gave Les Bleus the lead in the 58th minute from the penalty spot, however the Socceroos equalized just four minutes later. It looked for a bit that Australia would end up pulling off a massive draw against France, but an own goal from Aziz Behich would end the hopes of that as the French ended up the victors. Possession was almost even with France owning 51% of the possession, with 13 shots to Australia’s 6, including 6 shots on target to the Aussies’ 1.

Peru on the other hand will be looking for their first points of the tournament after falling to Denmark by a final score of 1-0. Christian Cueva had a golden opportunity to put the Peruvians in front just before halftime, but missed from the penalty spot and the Danes would make Peru pay for that miscue, with Yussuf Poulsen scoring the lone goal of the match in the 59th minute. Peru actually outpossesed Denmark with 52% possession, with 18 shots to Denmark’s 10 with 6 shots on target to Denmark’s 3. However it obviously was about quality and not quantity for Denmark as they cashed in on one of the three opportunities.
These two sides have never met in international competition.
It seems early to say but I honestly think that Peru missing that penalty in the opening match sealed their fate as it’s hard to rebound from that kind of heartbreak, knowing that it was the difference between getting no points and one or three from your opening game. France had a slow start to their tournament, but they still got the job done. I’m expecting coach Deschamps to have his troops ready for this one so I’ll back France to win with a -1.5 handicap.
