We have some Group D World Cup action from the Volgograd Arena on Friday, as Nigeria takes on Iceland.

Nigeria comes into this match not only looking for their first win of the World Cup, but their first point after being the only team in Group D stuck on 0 points after a tournament-opening 2-0 loss to Croatia on Saturday. Things got off to a rough start 32 minutes in when Oghenekaro Etebo put the ball past his own goalkeeper for the own goal and it stayed that way until the 71st minute when Luka Madrid doubled Croatia’s lead from the penalty spot, sealing Nigeria’s fate. The possession was nearly even, with Nigeria owning 47% possession in the loss, outshooting Croatia 14-11 with each side logging 2 shots on target apiece.

Iceland will be looking for their first win of the tournament as well following a massive 1-1 draw with Argentina. Sergio Aguero gave Argentina the lead 19 minutes in, but it would only last a whole 4 minutes before Alfred Finnbogason equalized for the Vikings. The draw was in danger in the 64th minute but Lionel Messi missed from the penalty spot with all of Iceland letting out a huge breath after. Iceland were dominated offensively by Argentina, with the Argentinians owning 73% possession to Iceland’s 27%, also being outshot 26-7 and 7-3 in terms of shots on target.

These two sides have never met in international competition.

While there is a possibility for Iceland to have a letdown here, and with Nigeria needing at least a point from this match, I can understand why the line is as tight as it is. However, I’m going to ride with Iceland to get the win here. That draw was huge for the Vikings’ confidence, as it’s gone to show that they can hang with the world’s best and that they aren’t just some cinderella from a couple of years ago. Nigeria has some talent but I think Iceland is just a step ahead so that’s why I’m going to roll with an Iceland victory in this one.
