Germany and Sweden meet Saturday in World Cup soccer action at Fisht Olympic Stadium.

Germany is coming off the most shocking result of the tournament yet, a 1-0 loss to Mexico. Despite getting off 25 shots and nine shots on goal, and owning 61 percent of the possession, the Germans were shutout and are in danger of not making out of the group stage. Keep in mind Germany is the defending champions of the World Cup and has finished no worse than third each of the last four appearances. Thomas Muller admitted after the loss that the pressure is quite high right now while the German press has been highly critical of the club after such a performance. However, the good news is that Germany was at least the aggressor in the losing effort and had plenty of chances to find the back of the net. It’s not like national eleven parked the bus and wasn’t playing with energy. You get nine shots on goal, usually good things happen.

Germany vs. Sweden - 6/23/18 World Cup Soccer Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Sweden finds itself in a good spot after a 1-0 win over South Korea, its first World Cup match since 2006. In the victory, Sweden controlled the ball for 52 percent of the match, didn’t allow a single shot on goal and was able to steal three points on a Andreas Granqvist penalty kick. It was certainly a result that the Blue-Yellow will take, but that match overall was quite ugly and a performance that will need to be improved if its going to have success against the desperate Germans. Sweden was aggressive on the defensive end by not allowing any quality shots and fouling 20 times, but it lacked any creativity offensively and was saved on a penalty kick. Sweden is in good position right now and has pitched three straight shutouts, but this team must take its play to another level to have a chance in this match.

There’s no previous meetings between these two sides.

It’s important that Germany gets off to a fast start and digs its teeth into this match early. The longer Sweden hangs around, the more the pressure builds for the Germans. Muller already admitted his club is feeling the pressure of pretty much being put into a must win situation this early. At the end of the day, however, Germany is the better team here and should win this match, pressure or not.

This team is too deep and too experienced to bow out like this.
