We have some Group H World Cup action from the Central Stadium in Yekaterinburg when Japan takes on Senegal on Sunday.

Japan comes into this match looking to build some steam after an impressive 2-1 win over Colombia in their last outing. Japan had an early advantage after Colombian defender Carlos Sanchez was sent off for a handball, which led to a penalty that Shinji Kagawa slotted home to give the Japanese a 1-0 lead but that only lasted until the 39th minute when Jose Quintero equalized for Colombia. It stayed level until the 73rd when Japan scored a 2nd goal from a set piece, coming off of a Keisuke Honda corner which Yuya Osako headed home to eventually award Japan all three points. Japan had the advantage on the stat sheet, owning 58% possession to Colombia’s 58%, outshooting Colombia 14-8 and 6-3 in terms of shots on target.

Senegal on the other hand come into this match looking to build on what many would consider to be an upset with a 2-1 win of their own against Poland to start their tournament. Senegal took the lead on an own goal from Poland’s Thiago Cionek, and doubled their lead at the hour mark thanks to a marker from M’Baye Niang. Poland did get one back to cut the deficit in half, but it was too little too late as Senegal claimed all three points. Senegal were out possessed by Poland 59%-41%, and outshot 10-8, including 4-2 in terms of shots on goal.

These two sides have only met once back in 2003, which was a 1-0 win for Senegal.

Both sides looked impressive in their opening matches, and I find myself making sure I don’t have the group upside down because the way it sits is the exact opposite that I had going into the tournament. Both sides will want a win to ensure their spot in the knockout stages, but also know that a single point will also put themselves in a good spot as well. All in all, I think both sides cancel each other out and I see this being a stalemate at the final whistle. Braver punters may also want to chase the final score line of 1-1 for some extra risk.
