Top spot is on the line when two knockout stage bound teams meet in the final day of Group A World Cup action as Uruguay battles Russia from the Cosmos Arena on Monday.

Uruguay will look to enter the round of 16 unbeaten after making it two straight victories to start the World Cup after a 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia in their last outing. Luis Suarez notched the lone goal for La Celeste in the match with his first marker of the tournament, however the Saudis had the advantage in possession, out possessing Uruguay 53%-47%. Uruguay did outshoot Saudi Arabia however, 12-8 and 4-3 in regards to shots on target.

Russia on the other hand will be looking for another trademark win to add to an already strong start to their host year, putting forth a decisive 3-1 win over Egypt. The match was a scoreless stalemate at half time, but by the 62nd minute, the Russians found themselves up 3-0 thanks to an own goal from Egypt’s Ahmed Fathy, and two goals in three minutes from Denis Cheryshev in the 59th and Artem Dzyuba in the 62nd. Mohamed Salah pulled a goal back for Egypt but it was too little too late as Russia secured all three points. Russia were out possessed and outshot by Egypt 54%-46% and 13-11 respectively, but put more shots on target than Egypt, 3-1.

The lone meeting between these two sides was a 1-1 draw back in 2012.

Uruguay probably should be the favourites here as they have the higher profile squad coming into this matchup and have won five straight matches in all competitions. However, there’s some kind of magic about this Russian squad, who seem to be feeding off of the home energy and have obliterated any doubts of their team coming into this tournament. I mean it’s the first time Russia could win all three group games in the national side’s history both as Russia and the Soviet Union. Granted this match is for first place in the group, but Russia has pummelled Egypt and Saudi Arabia by a combined score line of 8-1, while Uruguay scraped by with a pair of one goal victories. All in all, I think given the line, it’s worth taking a shot on Russia to claim top spot in the group in what should be a highly competitive affair.
