Saudi Arabia and Egypt meet Monday in World Cup soccer action at the Volgograd Arena.

Saudi Arabia gave a much better effort in its 0-1 loss to Uruguay than it did in its blowout loss to Russia, but moral victories only go so far for  a country that hasn’t made it out of the group stages of the World Cup since 1994. Saudi Arabia actually won the possession percentage in its recent match and had some good looks at the net, so there are positives to take away from its last match. Unfortunately, confidence can only be so high for a Saudi Arabia side that’s lost five straight matches overall and has scored just one goal in its last four matches combined. Saudi Arabia is in danger of going winless in each of its last four World Cup appearances, and that should be motivation enough to put together an honest effort here.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Egypt has been one of the more disappointing teams of the tournament, as it’s also 0-2-0 after a 0-1 loss to Uruguay and a 1-3 loss to Russia. The Pharaohs did get Mohamed Salah going in its last match, but it’s all too little too late and at this point its all about pride for a club that was considered a dark horse to make some noise in this tournament. Egypt has now lost five of its last seven matches overall and has really struggled on the offensive end where its been held to one or less goals in each of its last eight matches. The one thing that should motivate Egypt in this match is the fact this club has never won a match in the World Cup and is 0-2-4 overall.

The last match between these two teams was a 2005 friendly match, which was won by Egypt 1-0. The match was won on a second half goal from Emad Moteab.

With nothing but pride on the line here, I expect both sides to open it up, play free and get plenty of looks at the net. While neither team has been impressive in its first two games, Egypt is the better side overall and is led by one of the best players in the world. Assuming both clubs play motivated and with a purpose, I would give the edge to Egypt.

Egypt goes home, but does get a World Cup victory to build on moving forward.
