Germany and South Korea meet Wednesday in World Cup soccer action at the Kazan Arena.

Germany looked like its chances to advance out of the group stages were all but over until Toni Kroos found the back of the net on a set piece in extra time, beating Sweden 2-1. It was the shot in the arm the Germans needed and gives them a real shot to advance out of this group despite its opening loss to Mexico. Germany is coming off a match in which it controlled 71 percent of the possession and had 16 total shots, completely dominating the match despite needing a miracle goal to come out victorious. Germany has actually been in complete control of both matches this tournament, but the lack of comfortable results has to be worrisome for the defending champs. It seems like there’s just something missing at the moment. Germany hasn’t been bounced in the group stages of the World Cup since 1938.

Germany vs. South Korea - 6/27/18 World Cup Soccer Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports

South Korea has experienced back-to-back tough losses but still has a chance to advance from this group if it wins big and gets some help. South Korea is coming off a frustrating loss in which it actually outshot Mexico and was the much more physical team. Shin Tae-yong admitted that his teams defense was rattled after the early penalty goal the Mexicans scored, and they couldn’t get back to playing their style. The Taegeuk Warriors have now been on the losing end in six of their last eight matches and have scored just one goal in their last four matches combined. Confidence can’t be real high for South Korea at the moment despite still not being mathematically eliminated from the knockout stages. South Korea hopes to make it out of the group stages of the World Cup for the third time since 2002.

The last meeting between these clubs was a 2004 friendly, a match South Korea won 3-1. In front of over 45,000 people, Kim Dong-jin, Lee Dong-gook and Cho Jae-jin all found the back of the net for the Koreans.

South Korea hasn’t looked good for quite some time and is now running up against a powerhouse that has new life after its win over Sweden. This is a match where Germany should once again control the pace of the match and get majority of the looks offensively. South Korea simply doesn’t have the difference makers to counter Germany, so it’s going to be on defense much of the match and it’s usually only a matter of time before things fall apart when playing that style.

I see the Germans lighting the scoreboard up and winning big. Give me the over three goals.
