Mexico and Sweden meet Wednesday in World Cup soccer action at Central Stadium.

Mexico has been in complete control of its previous two matches, beating Germany 1-0 and recent South Korea, 2-1. In its win over Mexico, El Tri controlled possession for 58 percent of the match cruised after Carlos Vela and Javier Hernández found the back of the net. Mexico allowed a late goal in stoppage time, but the match was well in hand at that point and the confidence seems to be growing for this team as it gears up for the possible knockout stages. Mexico has now won five of its last eight matches and has been aggressive defensively, allowing one or less goals in seven of those games. If Mexico is going to be able to find the consistent offensive punch its found recently, this is a dangerous club nobody wants to face moving forward. Mexico hasn’t been bounced in the group stages of the World Cup since 1978.

Mexico vs. Sweden - 6/27/18 World Cup Soccer Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Sweden looked like it was going to cruise to a 1-1 draw against Germany and possession itself for the knockout stages, but it allowed a late goal to Toni Kroos. Having a man advantage and every chance in the world to put the match away, it was easily the most heartbreaking loss of the tournament for any club. While still playing for something in this match, you could easily see Sweden have a hard time rebounding from such a performance and bowing out gracefully. There was really no excuse for how that match played out and the Blue-Yellow has to be kicking itself right now. Sweden hasn’t been bounced in the group stages of the World Cup since 1990. Sweden better have a short memory or this match could get very ugly.

The last match between these clubs was a friendly back in 2009, which was a 1-0 victory for Sweden. The match was won on a goal from Alexander Farnerud in the second half.

If the Germany - Sweden match resulted in a draw, you could almost put your life savings on this match being a draw. Nobody wants to see Germany in the knockout stages, and, well, Sweden didn’t do its part to remove any possibility of that happening. Mexico just has to get a point in this match to guarantee an advance, while Sweden needs a win and preferably a win by a large margin to increase its chances. With all that said, you can expect Mexico to be extra aggressive defensively and simply play not to lose. Offensive creativity isn’t needed here. Don’t be cute and find yourself missing out.

I like the under 2.5 goals.
