Panama and Tunisia meet Thursday in World Cup soccer action at Mordovia Arena.

Panama has looked like a team making its first ever World Cup appearance, as it was smoked by Belgium and Germany by a combined score of 1-9. Felipe Baloy scored the first and only World Cup goal for this country, finding the back of the net late against Germany when it was already in a 0-6 hole. The one bright spot for Panama is that those were expected results, as those two opponents are some of the best competition in the tournament and are proven to be title contenders with the way the draw has played out. The bad news for Panama is that neither match was close and this club has now lost five of its last seven matches. The defense for the Canal Men has also been extremely poor, allowing three or more goals in three of its last six matches, which includes six goals against Germany and six goals in a friendly match a few months ago against Switzerland. This is obviously a much more manageable match for Panama.

Tunisia was outscored by Belgium and Germany with a combined score of 3-7. While that’s nothing to brag about exactly, Tunisia did find offensive success against Belgium and hung around for parts of that match but couldn’t overcome the brilliance of Romelu Lukaku. Tunisia has seen three different players find the back of the net this tournament and has scored at least once in six of its last seven matches overall. The issue for the Eagles of Carthage is that the defense has allowed seven goals this tournament and two or more goals in four of its last five matches overall. In a tournament where goals have been so tough to come by for many sides, it’s damn near impossible to win or even compete when allowing crooked numbers on the scoreboard. Tunisia looks for its second ever World Cup victory and first since 1978.

There’s no previous meetings between these two sides.

There’s nothing but pride on the line in this match given that both clubs are already bounced from the tournament. However, there’s still things to play for considering Panama has never won a World Cup match and Tunisia hasn’t won one since 1978. I’m sure guys would love to get a victory to end the drought and build momentum heading into the next four years. Either way, you can expect an open match with both teams going for it, as a loss doesn’t really do much. Both sides have also been poor defensively. I expect some fireworks here.

Give me the over.
