We have some World Cup knockout round action on Monday from the Cosmos Arena as Brazil takes on Mexico in a round of 16 matchup.

Brazil comes into the knockout round as the winners of group E, finishing atop the group with 7 of a possible 9 points. Brazil started the tournament with a far from inspiring 1-1 draw with Switzerland before rattling off back-to-back 2-0 wins over Costa Rica and on the final matchday, Serbia. Paulinho gave the Brazilians the lead 36 minutes in and Thiago Silva doubled that advantage in the 68th minute. Brazil out possessed Serbia 56%-44%, while outshooting the Serbians 13-10 and 6-1 in regards to shots on target.

Mexico vs. Brazil - 7/2/18 World Cup Soccer Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Eric Seals-USA TODAY Sports

Mexico booked their spot in the knockout rounds after finishing 2nd in group F, starting the tournament with what many considered a shock 1-0 win over Germany and a 2-1 win over South Korea before falling to Sweden on the final matchday of group play by a final score of 3-0 to award the group to Sweden. Mexico looked destined for a scoreless draw at the half, but conceded three times in 24 minutes starting in the 50th minute en route to the loss. El Tri out possessed Swede 65%-35% and outshot the Swedes 19-13, but were outshot 5-3 in terms of shots on target.

Head-to-head, Brazil have won four of the last six meetings with the other two results ending in a Mexico win and a scoreless draw that happened in the 2014 World Cup.

Mexico is not a team to be overlooked as Guillermo Ochoa can steal a game for El Trio whenever he is in net. However, Brazil seemed to be picking up steam after their last group victory that sealed top spot in group E, and have the deeper squad from top to bottom. All in all, I wouldn’t be surprised if this match went beyond 90 minutes, but I think Brazil to advance is the pick in this matchup.
