We have a marquee matchup in the MLS this weekend, as the New York Red Bulls host Sporting Kansas City from the Red Bull Arena.
The New York Red Bulls come into this match looking to rebound after having their four game unbeaten run halted with a 1-0 loss to rival New York City FC in their last outing. The match was a scoreless draw heading into the half, and was quite a dull affair for the most part with the first yellow card being branded in the 67th minute. We looked destined for both sides to split the spoils, but Maxi Morales gave NYCFC the lead with 5 minutes to go, ensuring the Red Bulls went home empty handed. The Red Bulls were out possessed 54%-46%, with each side logging 14 shots, with 4 on target. Bradley Wright-Phillips leads the Red Bulls with 11 goals this season while Alejandro Romero Gamarra leads the team in assists with 6 helpers this season.

Sporting Kansas City will be looking for a huge win on the road to break out of a three game winless drought, drawing 2-2 against Toronto FC in their last outing. KC fell behind 1-0 in the 25th minute and it stayed that way until just before the hour mark, when Kansas City struck twice in four minutes thanks to a pair of goals from Ilie Sanchez and Johnny Russell. TFC equalized eight minutes later, resulting in out full time score draw. KC out possessed Toronto 54%-46%, and outshot the Reds 18-8 and 5-3 in terms of shots on target. Russell and Daniel Salloi are tied for the KC lead in scoring with 6 goals apiece, while Salloi leads KC in assists with 6 helpers this season.
Head-to-head, Sporting KC have had the bulk of the success in recent memory, going unbeaten in the last six meetings across all competitions with four wins and two draws. Kansas City also won the last meeting in New York back in 2016.
This has the makings of game of the week in the league as both teams are near the top of their respective conferences. However, I feel like we’d be missing a great chance if we look past Sporting KC here. Sure, New York is a tough place to go on the road and win, but Sporting have played well on the road and have a strong history with the Red Bulls, so I feel a strong value play is to go with Kansas City and the draw on a double chance.
