We have some MLS action on Sunday from Mercedes-Benz Stadium as Atlanta United host Seattle Sounders.
Atlanta United come into this match looking to build off of a 2-0 bounce back win over Philadelphia Union in their last outing to keep Atlanta sitting at the top of the Eastern Conference. The match was a scoreless stalemate after the first 45 minutes, and it stayed that way until the 57th minute when Atlanta were awarded a penalty that Josef Martinez stepped up and buried for United. Hector Villalba doubled the advantage for the visitors just 18 minutes later, awarding the visitors all three points. Atlanta were out possessed by Philadelphia 53%-47%, and outshot 18-16, but Atlanta owned the more quality chances, outshooting the Union 8-3 in terms of shots on target. Martinez leads the entire league in scoring with 18 goals this season, one shy of his entire tally from last year, while Miguel Almiron leads Atlanta with 9 assists this season.

The Seattle Sounders will look for a positive road result after going winless in four of their last five games following a scoreless draw with the New England Revolution in their last outing. The match was viewed by many as a very dull affair with not much happening as the Sounders were out possessed by New England 55%-45% and outshot 9-6 with each side logging just one shot on target by the final whistle. Will Bruin is the catalyst for the Seattle offense, leading the Sounders with 5 goals and 4 assists this season.
The lone league meeting between these two sides last March ended in a 0-0 draw at Atlanta.
There’s not much of a head-to-head history to go off of and to maybe make a case for the Sounders here, but even if there were, these two teams are just on completely different wavelengths this season. I’d like to say Seattle could hang around here after going unbeaten in their last two road games, but I just think Atlanta and Martinez specifically will be too much for the Sounders to handle. Atlanta should cruise to a victory and all three points here.
