We have some MLS action from Providence Park on Saturday night, as the Portland Timbers host the Montreal Impact.
The Portland Timbers will be looking to keep their unbeaten run going which currently sits at a whopping 12 games following a scoreless draw against LAFC in their last outing. The Timbers scratched and clawed for a point on the road after allowing LAFC to own 56% possession to the Timbers’ 44%, while also being outshot 13-11 with each side having 6 shots on goal. Samuel Armenteros and and Diego Valeri share Portland’s lead in scoring with 6 goals apiece, with Valeri leading the Timbers with 7 assists on the year.

The Montreal Impact will be looking to stay hot after winning five of their last six games following a 2-0 win over San Jose in their last outing. Saphir Taider gave the Impact the lead just 8 minutes in and the score stayed that way until Ignacio Piatti doubled the advantage in the 74th minute, handing the Impact all three points at full time. Montreal owned a 52%-48% advantage in the possession battle, outshooting the Quakes 13-10 with each side having 2 shots on target. Piatti leads the Impact with 10 goals and 7 assists this season.
Head-to-head, Montreal has had a slight edge, winning 3 of the 6 all-time meetings between the draw with 2 wins for Portland and a draw sandwiched in the middle. Montreal won the most recent meeting 4-1 back in 2017.
Montreal has looked good during their winning streak, however, four of those five wins came against teams ranked 9th or lower in their current conferences at the time of this post. That includes their win over San Jose who are the worst in the league, a 2-1 win over Colorado who are right above San Jose, and a pair of wins over Orlando who were in the midst of that horrendous 9 game losing skid. Portland has been impressive during this unbeaten run, and I think they extend it with a solid win at home here.
