Benfica and Lyon meet Wednesday in International Champions Cup soccer action at Estadio Algarve.
Benfica is coming off a 1-1 draw against Juventus in which it lost on penalty kicks. In the losing effort, Benfica got just two of its nine shot attempts on goal and controlled the ball 50 percent of the match. Alejandro Grimaldo was the lone goal scorer for the club and later allowed a late goal to eventually force the match into extra time. Benfica still has to like the fact it was able to hold its own against such a quality side and this is a team that’s now scored at least one goal in each of its last six matches. Benfica has shown to be a very disciplined side that doesn’t take too many chances defensively and has been able to capitalize on many of its offensive chances. You have to like the way Benfica has played its last couple of matches, preseason or not.

Lyon is coming off a 2-1 victory over Wolfsburg, giving this side its second victory in its last four tries. Bertrand Traoré and Martin Terrier both found the back of the net rather early in the first half for Lyon, and they were able to sit on the lead for the remainder of the match. Lyon has now been on the winning side in 10 of its last 13 matches and has score two or more goals in 12 of those matches overall. As long as Lyon can continue that offensive pressure and get the most out of its quality looks, this is a team you have to watch out for moving forward. Lyon could end up being a surprise team in French Ligue 1 this season if it can remain in this form.
The last time these teams met was in a 2016 friendly, a match Lyon won 3-2. These clubs split the two meetings in the 2010 Champions League. The last two matches between these clubs combined for 12 goals.
Lyon has been sharp offensively, but Benfica has been the more balanced and consistent team overall. Benfica doesn’t give up much easy on the defensive end and does just enough with the few offensive chances its been able to put together. While the previous matches between these clubs were high scoring, Benfica could frustrate Lyon defensively in this match and find that one strike to seal the deal.
While I gave the draw a strong look, I’m going to back Benfica for the victory.
