We have some MLS action from Mercedes Benz Stadium on Saturday as Atlanta United plays host to Toronto FC.
Atlanta United will look to keep their unbeaten run going which currently sits at four games following a 2-1 win over Montreal in their last outing. Josef Martinez struck twice, 26 minutes apart in the 31st and 57th minutes to give ATL a 2-0 lead that was enough for all three points, even with Montreal pulling a goal back three minutes before the full 90 minutes were up. Atlanta were out possessed in the win with just 44% possession to Montreal’s 56%, with each side registering 13 shots with Atlanta putting 8 shots on goal to Montreal’s 7. Martinez extended his MLS lead in goal scoring to 24 this season, while Miguel Almiron leads the team in assists with 9 helpers this season.

Toronto FC will be looking to build on back-to-back league victories over Chicago Fire, including a 3-0 victory last time out, pushing their winning streak to four games across all competitions. The match was a scoreless stalemate at the half, with TFC breaking the game open with three goals in 37 minutes thanks to Jozy Altidore, Jonathan Osorio and Sebastian Giovinco in the 52nd, 72nd and 89th minutes respectively. Toronto out possessed Chicago 60%-40%, with 20 shots to Chicago’s 7 and outshooting the Fire 7-3 in terms of shots on target. Osorio leads the Reds with 8 goals this season while Giovinco is TFC’s leading assist man with 5 assists this season.
Both all-time head-to-head meetings between these two sides have ended in a 2-2 draw.
I predicted last time out that Martinez would prove to be too much for the Impact and that came to fruition as Atlanta now looks for their fourth win in four tries against Canadian opposition in this one. However, as bad as TFC have been at times this season, the return of Altidore to the lineup has appeared to spark this squad. This will be a true test as Atlanta is a much better team than Chicago, but I think TFC will be up to the task and can get a point so I’ll side with the draw in this one. Braver punters may want to chase a third straight 2-2 final score line to increase the value of the bet.
