Incheon United is welcoming Daegu FC to Incheon Football Stadium in round 1 of the South Korean K-League 1.
Incheon is one of the weakest teams in the K-League 1 and they ended the regulation of the last season in 11th place with only 26 points, 29 scored goals, and 51 conceded goals in 33 games. In the Relegation round, Incheon got lucky and they ended in 4th place with 34 points, just one point above the relegation playoffs zone, which means that Incheon gets to stay in the K-League 1 this season as well. Incheon played one friendly match back in late April, and they ended up losing that match 0-1 against Suwon FC. Defensively, Incheon was a disaster last season and mainly that is what cost them a better spot in the standings. Their offense wasn’t great either and Incheon was pretty far from one of the top six places that lead to the Championship round. The main goal for Incheon this season is to stay outside the relegation zone as well, and if they get lucky enough to enter the Championship round, that is just a bonus for Incheon.
Daegu is a solid South Korean team that is capable of making life uncomfortable to the top three teams in South Korea, Ulsan, Jeonbuk, and Seoul. Daegu ended the regular part of the last season in 4th place with 50 points, and with that Daegu entered the Championship round. In the Championship round, Daegu ended in 5th place with 55 points, just one point away from the spot that would take them into the Asian Champions League qualifications. Daegu is a good team with a solid roster where they have a few good international players who can make a difference at the right time. Daegu’s main goal this season is to be in the top 6 and to enter the Championship round of the K-League 1, but I don’t think that Daegu can compromise one of the top three teams in South Korea simply because they don’t have enough quality to stay consistent while playing on the road. I expect from Daegu to be somewhere from 4th to 6th spot in the regular part of the season, but once the Championship round starts, I don’t see Daegu getting to one of the top three spots.
Incheon’s last home win against Daegu was back in 2013. Daegu has not lost their last 7 away matches dating back to last season. Even though Daegu is the better team here, I expect this to be a tough match for both of these teams. I’m going to go with a draw here for a nice plus money.
