Ulsan Hyundai is welcoming Sangju Sangmu to Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium in round 1 of the South Korean K-League 1 season.
Ulsan is one of the best teams in South Korean and is once again one of the main competitors for the title in South Korean K-League 1. This is the first game of the new season for Ulsan and they didn’t play any friendly matches in the preseason because of the Coronavirus which makes the start of the season hard for any team because there is not proper chemistry inside the team. This is a very specific situation and there is no way to know how the players will react without a single game in their feet. Ulsan ended the regulation of the last season in the first place with 69 points, 64 scored goals, and 32 conceded goals in 33 games. The first six teams in the regulation got qualified for the Championship round. Ulsan was playing well in the Championship round, but unfortunately for them, they ended up in second place with 79 points, the same amount as Jeonbuk, but with worse goal differential. I can’t imagine how is it feel to lose a title over just a few goals, but I imagine it’s hard, and I hope that everyone at Ulsan recovered and is ready for the new title run this season.
Sangju is an average team in South Korea and they lost their spot in the Championship round also on goal differential. Sangju ended the regulation in 7th place with 46 points, 42 scored goals, and 48 conceded goals. In the relegation round, Sangju was the best team and they ended the season in the first place of the Relegation round with 55 points, 7 points more than Suwon in second place. Offensively, Sangju was solid, but their defense wasn’t that great, and they conceded a total of 53 goals last season. Same as Ulsan, Sangju hasn’t played any friendly games before in the preseason so it will be equally hard for them in their opening match. Sangju is the type of team that will win most of their points while playing at home, but that is simply not enough if they want to end up in the Championship round this season. I will be able to say more about this team after this first match, but as of now, I don’t expect from Sangju to be in the top 6 of the South Korean K-League 1.
While playing at home, Ulsan has not lost to Sangju in their last 3 games and the trends are on Ulsan’s side In this matchup. Ulsan is the better team here and I think they get a nice win at home in their opening match of the season.
