Borussia Dortmund is hosting FC Schalke 04 at Signal Iduna Park in a derby match of round 26 in German Bundesliga.
Borussia is playing well this season in Bundesliga, but unfortunately for them, that is not enough for first place in the standings. Borussia is in 2nd place with 51 points, 68 scored goals, and 33 conceded goals, 4 points behind Bayern Munich at the top. Borussia Dortmund has won 4 straight games in Bundesliga where they scored 9 goals in those four games, while they conceded only 1 goal. In the Champions League, Borussia was playing against PSG, and after winning the first leg 2-1, Borussia has lost 2-0 in the second leg and was knocked out of the competition. In their last Bundesliga match against M’gladbach on the road, Borussia has had 55% of ball possession, 4 shots on goal, 3 corner kicks, and 84% of accurate passes. Dortmund was the better team here and has deservedly won this match 1-2. Sancho was Borussia’s best player before the season stopped with 14 goals and 15 assists in 23 games, while Reus added 11 goals. Young superstar Erling Haaland added 9 goals in 8 games. Delaney and Reus are the only two injured players for Borussia Dortmund. Before the season started I was hoping this will finally be the season when Borussia will be able to win the title, and there is still time, but Borussia was sloppy on the defensive end and they lost points where they shouldn’t have. There are enough games left for Borussia to catch up to Bayern, but they can’t afford to slip up along the way.
Schalke hasn’t been playing well before the season stopped, they lost 3 of their six games, while the other three ended in a draw. During those six games, Schalke has scored only 2 goals, while conceding 11 goals. Schalke is in 6th place in Bundesliga standings with 37 points and they are with one foot in the Europa League, at least for now. I think Schalke is one of the few teams that actually benefit from the stoppage of Bundesliga considering their terrible form, but seeing how they haven’t played a game in two months, we will see how will Schalke handle themselves this weekend. In their last match against Hoffenheim at home, Schalke has had 43% of ball possession, 4 shots on goal, 4 corner kicks, and 79% of the correct passes. Schalke had the 1-0 lead at the half time, but unfortunately for them, Hoffenheim was able to tie the game and it ended in a 1-1 draw. Serdar is the leading goal scorer for Schalke with 7 goals, while Harit added 6 goals. Even with the two months break, Schalke has a long list of injured players that will certainly impact their form moving forward. Stambouli, Sane, Caliguri, Kabak, Mascarell, Miranda, and Serdar are all injured. If healthy, Schalke would have a good chance to get qualified for the Europa League, but the pressure from behind Schalke is immense and I just don’t have confidence that Schalke will be able to keep their current place in the standings until the end of the season.
Dortmund’s home record this season is 9-3-0, while Schalke hasn’t won any of their last 6 games. Schalke is playing much better this season than last season, but they were unfortunate with all the injuries that might cost them the Europa League. Borussia has to win here if they want to keep their dreams of the title alive, and I think they will get it.
