Werder Bremen is welcoming Bayer 04 Leverkusen to Weserstadion in a Monday derby or round 26 in German Bundesliga.
Werder has been a disaster this season. They have won only 1 of their last 8 games and Werder is in 17th place in the Bundesliga standings, in the relegation zone and their future looks pretty grim at this point. In their last Bundesliga match against Hertha on the road, Werder had 51% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, 1 corner kick, and 69% of accurate passes. Werder had the 1-2 lead at the half time, but Hertha was able to tie the game in the second half and this match ended in a 2-2 draw. Werder has a solid team and I don’t understand what happened to them this season, and even though the season is not yet over and Werder has good chances to get out of the relegation zone, the pressure Werder is experiencing is immense. Rashica has scored 7 goals and added 5 assists for Werder this season, while Osako and Klaassen added 4 goals each. Mohwald, Fullkrug, Toprak, and Pizarro are all injured for Werder Bremen. Werder isn’t playing well on either end, especially on the defensive end where they conceded massive 55 goals. If Werder wants to stay in Bundesliga next season, something has to drastically change in their game, especially defensively.
Leverkusen started the season slowly, but before the stoppage, Leverkusen was playing in fantastic form, both in the Europa League and in Bundesliga. Leverkusen hasn’t lost any of their last 11 games, and 10 of those were wins. With 47 points, 45 scored goals, and 30 conceded goals, Leverkusen is in 5th place in the standings, just 2 points away from the Champions League. Leverkusen has been outstanding offensively where they scored 14 goals in their last 5 games, while their defense hasn’t been bad also with only 4 conceded goals in their last 5 games. In their latest match in Bundesliga against Eintracht at home, Leverkusen was fantastic with 61% of ball possession, 5 shots on goal, 1 corner kick, and 87% of the correct passes. Leverkusen was fantastic in this match and has won 4-0. Kevin Volland has scored 9 goals and added 7 for Leverkusen so far this season, while Havertz and Alario added 6 goals each. Kevin Volland is the only injured player for Leverkusen. Bailey, Vollan, Havertz, and Paulinho are Leverkusen’s best players, but Leverkusen is filled with even more young and talented players who all have a bright future ahead of them. There is a lot of interest in Kai Havertz and he will most likely leave Leverkusen at the end of the season, but he is still a very young player that is not in a rush to leave the club where he is the captain and the most important player.
The trends are on Werder’s side in this matchup, but I can’t disregard the fact how much worse is Werder this season. Both teams could use a win here, but I must side with Leverkusen just because they are a better team with more depth and quality.
