SC Freiburg is welcoming Werder Bremen to Schwarzwald-Stadion in round 27 of German Bundesliga.
Freiburg has had some fantastic games this season, but as of late they have been playing hot and cold. With 37 points, 35 scored goals, and 36 conceded goals, Freiburg is in high 7th place in the standings, just 2 points away from the Europa League which would be a historic success for Freiburg. In their most recent Bundesliga match against Leipzig on the road, Freiburg has had 34% of ball possession, 1 shot on goal, 4 corner kick, and 72% of the correct passes. Freiburg was a huge underdog in this match, and they were forced to defend for most of the game, but by some miracle, Freiburg has scored a leading goal in the 34th minute of the first half. In the second half Leipzig has shifted gears and has scored a tying goal in 77th minute. The result hasn’t changed again, and this match ended in a 1-1 draw. Petersen is the leading goal scorer for Freiburg with 8 goals, while Waldschmidt added 5 goals. Lukas Kubler is the only injured player for Freiburg. It’s quite a surprise seeing Freiburg this high in the table, and even though Freiburg hasn’t lost any of their last 2 games, now is the time when teams with more quality show their worth, and I’m afraid Freiburg isn’t one of those teams. The dream of the Europa League is close, but I don’t think Freiburg will make it in the Europa League.
Werder is in the terrible form this season, and they won only 1 of their last 9 games. With only 18 points, 28 scored goals, and huge 59 conceded goals, Werder is in 17th place in the standings, 9 points away from the safe zone outside the relegation zone. We are in the stage of the season when every single point matter, but Werder isn’t showing any signs of improvement, and Bundesliga is getting further and further with every game week. Werder was playing against Bayer Leverkusen at home last week and they were a disaster with only 36% of ball possession, 1 shot on goal, 2 corner kicks, and 80% of accurate passes. Werder didn’t stand a chance in this match because Leverkusen is playing fantastic soccer on both ends right now. Werder has lost this game 1-4. Milot Rashica has scored 7 times for Werder, while Osako and Klaassen added 4 goals each. Mohwald, Fullkrug, Toprak, Pizarro, and Augustinsson are all injured. All of these injuries are certainly having an impact on Werder’s game style and chemistry and mood inside the team, but if Werder wants to give themselves a chance of staying in Bundesliga next season, they will need to overcome the issues they have and enter each game like it’s their last.
Even though Freiburg is in better form overall this season, I think that both Freiburg and Werder have solid teams with about the same quality. Both Freiburg and Werder are not too consistent on the defensive end, and for that reason I will pick something on goals here.
