FSV Mainz 05 is welcoming RB Leipzig to Opel Arena in part of round 27 of German Bundesliga.
Mainz has been hot and cold this season and because of that they are still in danger of being relegated to Bundesliga 2. With 27 points, 36 scored goals, and 55 conceded goals, Mainz is in 15th place in the standings, just 4 points outside the relegation zone. Mainz was able to score a goal in their last 3 games, while they conceded at least one goal in 3 of their last 4 matches in Bundesliga. Quaison has scored 12 goals for Mainz so far this season, while Boetius and Onisiwo have 5 assists each. Zentner is the only injured player for Mainz and he will sit this game out. In their Bundesliga match against Koln last weekend, Mainz has had 52% of ball possession, 5 shots on goal, 7 corner kicks, and 82% of the correct passes. Mainz was losing 2-0 in this game, but with goals in 61st and 72nd minute they tied the game and it ended in a 2-2 draw. Mainz has won a precious point in their game last week, a point that could potentially mean a lot in the fight to stay in Bundesliga, but I’m not sure if they can do the same this week against one of the best teams in Bundesliga.
Leipzig was playing at home last week and they need a win to stay in pursuit of Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga. Leipzig was the better team by far in that match with 66% of ball possession, 8 shots on goal, 8 corner kicks, and 87% of accurate passes. Leipzig conceded a goal in the 34th minute of the first half, but they were able to tie the game in 77th minute. Unfortunately for Leipzig, they weren’t able to use more of their chances and this match ended in a 1-1 draw, and with that, I think that Leipzig has lost every chance to win the title. Leipzig is now in 4th place in the standings with 51 points, 7 points less than Bayern at the top. Of course, there is still time for Leipzig to catch up, but for that to happen Bayern would need to lose a few games in Bundesliga. Offensively, Leipzig is one of the best in Bundesliga with 63 scored goals, and 21 of those were scored by Timo Werner who will most likely leave Leipzig and sign with Liverpool in the summer. Nkunku added 13 assists for Leipzig this season. Ampadu is the only injured player for Leipzig. Seeing that Leipzig didn’t use most of their chances from last week, I expect that coach Nagelsmann will make a few changes in the lineup and tactics before this match because Leipzig can’t afford to go without a win another week.
The trends are on Leipzig’s side in this matchup and we have seen at least 3 goals in all seven games Mainz and Leipzig have played against each other. I was confident that Leipzig will win last week, and they should have, and I feel the same this week as well. I think Leipzig gets a nice win here.
