FC Schalke 04 is hosting Werder Bremen at VELTINS-Arena in round 29 of German Bundesliga.
Schalke is not having a good time in Bundesliga right now. In their last three games since the season started again, Schalke has 3 losses, 9 conceded goals, and only 1 scored goal. Thanks to the great start of the season, Schalke is now in 9th place in the standings with 37 points, 5 points away from the Europa League, but unless Schalke starts scoring goals and winning points, the Europa League will be a dream for them next season. In their latest Bundesliga match against Fortuna on the road earlier this week, Schalke was a disaster with only 33% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, 2 corner kicks, and 63% of the correct passes. Schalke had the lead in 53rd minute despite not showing anything in this match, but Fortuna turned things around in 5 minutes and Schalke has lost this match 2-1. Schalke is solid in the attacking end this season, or to be more precise, was solid, but their defense has been a disaster over their last 9 games where Schalke conceded at least one goal in 8 of those 9 games. Serdar os the leading goal scorer for Schalke with 7 goals, while Harit added 6 goals. Stambouli, MAscarell, and Harit are injured and will not be in the lineup for this match. I’m not sure what is happening with Schalke right now, but I know that they are a better team than it appears right now. Hopefully Schalke can turn things around soon.
Werder is showing signs of life! With only 1 loss in their last three games, Werder is coming close to the edge of the relegation zone in Bundesliga. With 22 points, Werder is now in 17th place, still 6 points away from the safe zone, but Werder is slowly getting there. In their Bundesliga match against M’gladbach earlier this week, Werder had a decent game with 44% of ball possession, 7 shots on goal, 8 corner kicks, and 80% of accurate passes. It was a tight game that could have gone either way, but it ended in a 0-0 draw. Rashica is still the leading goal scorer for Werder with 7 goals, while Osako and Klaassen added 4 goals each. The injury list is still quite long for Werder with Mohwal, Fullkrug, Toprak, Pizarro, Philipp, and Plogmann all on the list. Bargfrede is suspended because of the yellow cards. I understand that all those injuries affected Werder’s season, but there is no excuse to score only 29 goals in 27 games, nevertheless, the offense isn’t Werder’s biggest problem as they conceded massive 59 goals so far this season. There are still enough games left for Werder to secure their spot in Bundesliga next season, but their defense must improve greatly.
Schalke has lost three straight home games against Werder. Both Schalke and Werder are in terrible forms, and both teams need a win here to get out of their slumps. This is one more match that could go either way and I considered going with Schalke to end their bad spell, but I just can’t back the team that is playing this terrible.
