Fortuna Dusseldorf is hosting Borussia Dortmund at Merku Spiel-Arena in round 31 of German Bundesliga.
Fortuna has lost only 1 of their last 5 games, but during that stretch, they have 3 draws and only 1 win. Fortuna is in 16th place in the standings, which is in the relegation playoff, but the good news is that they are only 3 points away from safety. In their last 5 games, Fortuna has conceded 10 goals, while scoring 5 goals. Hennings is the leading goal scorer for Fortuna with 14 goals, while Karaman and Thommy added 6 goals each. Steffen and Sobotka are still injured and will not be in the lineup. In their most recent Bundesliga game against Hoffenheim at home last weekend, Fortuna was the better team with 67% of ball possession, 4 shots on goal, 7 corner kicks, and 88% of the correct passes. This Fortuna dominance happened because Hoffenheim got the red card, but Fortuna still couldn’t win this game, which ended in a 2-2 draw. As most of the bottom Bundesliga teams are, Fortuna is bad at defense as well and they have conceded 60 goals in 30 games, an average of 2 conceded goals per game. There is simply not enough firepower is Fortuna’s offense to cover for bad defense, and for that reason, Fortuna might get relegated.
Borussia is playing in good form and they lost only 1 of their last 5 games, and that was in the crucial game against Bayern Munich 2 weeks ago. Borussia has conceded only 2 goals in their last 5 games while scoring 13 goals. With 63 points, Borussia is in second place in the standings, 7 points less than Bayern who will probably win the title because I don’t see them losing three games to let Borussia catch up. Overall, a solid season for Borussia, but once again they choked at the crucial moment and for that reason, I think coach Favre will be fired at the end of the season. In their last match in Bundesliga against Hertha at home, Borussia has had 63% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, 6 corner kicks, and 89% of the correct passes. Borussia was dominant, but this was an incredibly slow and boring game that I did not enjoy watching. With a goal from Can in 57th minute, Borussia has won this game 1-0. Reus, Zagadou, and Dahoud are still injured, while Schulz is questionable. Sancho has scored 17 goals and added 16 assists for Borussia this season, while Reus has 11 goals, and Haaland added 10 goals. Hazard and Hakimi also contributed a lot with 13 and 10 assists. I was hoping that Borussia can take the title from Bayern this season, but it looks like that is not happening. Borussia needs a coach that can get them mentally ready to face all the challenges, and Favre isn’t that coach.
Fortuna hasn’t won any of their last 3 games against Borussia, but those games were on the road. Borussia is the better team here, there is no doubt about that, but Fortuna needs the points. I think Borussia will go back on their usual scoring spree after a bad game against Hertha, and for that reason, I will combine Borussia and goals.
