FC Schalke 04 is hosting Bayer Leverkusen at VELTINS-Arena in round 31 of German Bundesliga.

Schalke is in the terrible, terrible form, and lucky for them they had a solid first half of the season which brought them to the top half of the standings, otherwise, Schalke would be in the relegation zone right now. Schalke hasn’t won any of their last 11 games, and they conceded at least one goal in 10 of those 11 games. With 38 points, Schalke is in 10th place in the standings, close to the Europa League, but with the way they are playing, I just don’t see Schalke getting there. Schalke has scored 35 goals in 30 games this season, not bad, but not to great either. Defensively, Schalke is a disaster this season with 47 conceded goals. In their last match in Bundesliga against Union Berlin on the road last weekend, Schalke has had 54% of ball possession, 1 shot on goal, 4 corner kicks, and 71% of the correct passes. In the first 30 minutes of the game we saw 2 goals, one on each side, and the result hasn’t changed again, and this match ended in a 1-1 draw. Serdar is the leading goal scorer for Schalke with 7 goals, while Harit added 6 goals, but unfortunately, both of them are injured and will skip this game. A solid first half of the season for Schalke, but they will need to change a lot of things in the summer if they don’t want to repeat this terrible second part of the season again.

Leverkusen is playing great soccer, especially in the attacking part of the game. With 56 points, Leverkusen is in 5th place in the standings, same amount at M’gladbach in 4th place, the last Champions League spot. Earlier this week, Leverkusen was playing in the DFB Pokal against Saarbrucken and has won this match 0-3. In their last Bundesliga game against Bayern Munich at home last weekend, Leverkusen has had 47% of ball possession, 6 shots on goal, 6 corner kicks, and 83% of accurate passes. Early in this match, 9th minute, Leverkusen has scored a goal and was in the lead, but before the first half was over, Bayern has scored 3 goals and has turned things around. In the second half, both teams have scored 1 goal each and Leverkusen has lost this game 2-4. In the upcoming four games of the Bundesliga season, the last 4 games, Leverkusen is playing against the teams that are solid, but beatable. Leverkusen’s only goal now is to get to that fourth place that will take them to the Champions League. Kai Havertz is Leverkusen’s top goalscorer with 11 goals, while Vollanad added 9 goals and 7 assists. Lars Bender is the only injured player. Leverkusen is playing some of the best soccer in Bundesliga this season and they can score a ton of goals, but more importantly, their defense has matured and is now more solid and consistent than last season. The race for that 4th place is tense, and there are three teams in the competition, and frankly, any of those teams could end up there.

Leverkusen hasn’t won any of their last 8 games, and they are on a 5-game winning streak on the road. I won’t overthink this, Leverkusen is the better team and needs this win more than Schalke. I will side with Leverkusen.
