RB Leipzig is hosting Borussia Dortmund at Red Bull Arena in a derby match of round 33 of German Bundesliga.
Leipzig hasn’t lost any of their game since the season restarted, but also every other game they played ended in a draw. In their last 7 games, Leipzig has 4 draws and 3 wins. With 63 points, Leipzig is in 3rd place, 3 points behind Borussia Dortmund, who they can catch up to if they beat them in this match. Leipzig has scored more than solid 79 goals this season, which is an average of over 2 scored goals. Leipzig has also scored at least 1 goal in their last 7 games, while they kept a clean sheet in 5 of said 7 games. Timo Werner is the leading goal scorer for Leipzig with 26 goals, but he would need to score at least 5 goals in the last two games to catch up to Lewandowski. Schick added 10 goals, while Nkunku has 14 assists. Ampadu and Poulsen are both injured and will not be playing in this game. In their last Bundesliga match against Fortuna, Leipzig has had 71% of ball possession, 5 corner kicks, 5 shots on target, and 88% of the correct passes. Leipzig has scored 2 fast goals in the second half, in 60th and 63rd minute, but their sloppy defense has cost them, and Fortuna was able to tie the game in 87th and 92nd minute. The match ended in a 2-2 draw. There is no doubt in my mind that Leipzig will qualify for the Champions League, the only question is from which spot.
Borussia has lost the title to Bayern second season in a row, and not only that, Borussia has lost their Bundesliga match to Mainz earlier this week. Borussia has had 69% of ball possession in that match, 4 shots on goal, 7 corner kicks, and 88% of the correct passes. I was saying in the previous Borussia article how slow has their game become thanks to Witsel and Can, and it happened again. Borussia Dortmund has lost this match 0-2, and now they are in danger of losing their second place. With 82 scored goals, Borussia is the second-best offensive team in Bundesliga, but they conceded 37 goals, and they choked in a crucial game against Bayern Munich, the only game Borussia shouldn’t have lost. Sancho has scored 17 goals and added 16 goals for Borussia this season, but he will most likely leave Dortmund and go to the EPL. Haaland and Reus both scored 11 goals this season. Zagadou, Dahoud, Delaney, and Reus are all injured and will not be playing again this season. For the last few seasons, Borussia has been Bayern’s biggest competition, but they always miss that one last step towards the title and the same happened this season.
Leipzig and Borussia are the two of the best teams in Bundesliga, and Leipzig has won only 1 of their 3 home games against Borussia Dortmund. The title race is gone, but both of these teams can lose their spots in case of a defeat. I will take a leap of faith here and stake some money on Leipzig at home.
