Newcastle United is hosting Sheffield United at St James’ Park in round 30 of the English Premier League.
Newcastle is a good team, and they are playing better and better under Steve Bruce, but they are still close to the relegation zone in the EPL. Newcastle is in 14th place with 35 points, only 25 scored goals, and 41 conceded goals. Alongside the EPL, Newcastle is playing in the FA Cup where they will face Manchester City next week in the quarterfinals. In their last EPL match against Southampton on the road, Newcastle was great with 62% of ball possession, 7 shots on target, 8 corner kicks, and 81% of the correct passes. It took Newcastle a while to get through Southampton’s defensive wall, but they finally did it 79th minute. Newcastle has won this game 0-1. Shelvey is Newcastle’s top goalscorer with only 5 goals, and considering that he is a defensive midfielder, the offensive situation in Newcastle is not good. Willems is the only injured player for Newcastle, and he should be back on the field in a couple of weeks. Alongside Norwich, Newcastle is the weakest team in the EPL, and if they don’t improve soon, the rest of the season will be hard for Newcastle United.
Sheffield on the other hand is having an amazing season and they are in 6th place with 44 points, in the brink of the Europa League. Sheffield isn’t attacking oriented team, instead, they are playing strong defense and are having a fantastic midfield. Sheffield has scored 30 goals in 29 games while conceding only 25 goals. In their first game since the restart, Sheffield was playing against Aston Villa on the road. With 55% of ball possession, 1 shot on goal, 4 corner kicks, and 80% of the correct passes, Sheffield was a slightly better team, and they would have won this game if not for a terrible mistake from the referees and goal technology that EPL uses. This match ended in a 0-0 draw. Mousset and Fleck have both scored 5 goals for Sheffield this season and both of them are expected to be in the starting lineup for this game. There are no injuries or suspensions for Sheffield United. Nobody expected Sheffield to play this well and be this high in the standings, I included, but their situation has made the EPL so much more interesting and for once not only the richest teams in England are at the top of the standings. I just hope that Sheffield can push through and stay consistent for the rest of the season.
Newcastle’s home record this season is 5-6-3, while Sheffield hasn’t lost any of their last 5 games on the road. Sheffield is definitely the better team here, but Newcastle has had some success against them at home. I will side with Sheffield here because they were robbed last week, and they will look to bounce back.
