Freiburg is hosting FC Schalke 04 at Schwarzwald-Stadion in part of round 34 in German Bundesliga.
Freiburg is in 8th place in the standings with 45 points, just 4 points outside the Europa League, which is out of their reach now, and they were so close to their dream. Freiburg has had a really good season with 44 scored goals and 47 conceded goals. In their last Bundesliga game against Bayern on the road, Freiburg has had only 39% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, 2 corner kicks, and 80% of the correct passes. We saw an amazing first half in this game where Bayern scored 3 goals, while Freiburg scored 1 goal. The final result of the match was 3-1 for Bayern Munich. If Freiburg was playing against any other team in Bundesliga in this crucial match, they would have maybe ended up in the Europa League, but they were unfortunate to have such a tough opponent. Overall, I believe everyone in Freiburg is extremely happy with their season, as they should be because this is a fantastic accomplishment for them. Nils Petersen has scored 11 goals for Freiburg this season, while Holer added 7 goals. Gunter has added 7 assists. Kath, Gulde, and Gubler are all injured. I love seeing a small team surprising everyone and being this high in the standings and I applaud Freiburg on their hard work and determination.
I think Schalke is happy that the season is over more than anyone in Bundesliga right now. Since the season was restarted, Schalke was playing terrible soccer and the closest they came to a win are the two 1-1 draws. Schalke is safely outside the relegation zone, in 11th place with 39 points, and they could go higher with a win, but I’m not sure if Schalke is capable of that right now. Serdar and Harit are two of the top goal scorers for Schalke with 7 and 6 goals, but unfortunately for Schalke, both of them are injured and will not be playing in this match. Mascarell, Burgstaller, and Sane are also injured. In their last Bundesliga game against Wolfsburg at home last weekend, Schalke was decent with 49% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, 2 corner kicks, and 81% of the correct passes. Once again, Schalke’s defense has failed them, and they lost this match 1-4. Before the restart, Schalke had a solid chance of getting to the Europa League, but all of that sunk to the bottom of the ocean when Schalke couldn’t get into better form. Better luck next season Schalke, you will definitely need it.
Freiburg is in the better form here, but none of that matters because neither of the teams would benefit from a win in this game. I would avoid betting on this game, but if I would have to pick something, I would pick goals as both teams will want to end the season in a good way.
